Paediatric FONTAN Surgery is surgery for small children who are suffering from ventricular defect in their hearts. In a normal human heart each ventricle does a separate job. The ventricle located on the right side of the heart pumps blood to the lungs and the ventricle located on the left side pumps blood into the body. But incase of children who need FONTAN Surgery, there is presence of only one ventricle for pumping the blood. This one ventricle is larger in size than a normal ventricle. Since this ventricle can only pump blood into the body and there is no pump for pumping blood into the lungs the heart has to be surgically corrected by FONTAN Surgery to maximise the efficiency of this one ventricle only.
In FONTAN Surgery the single ventricle and the single pump is used to efficiently pump the blood into the body and direct blood vessels are connected to the lungs which carry the blood directly without the need of the pump in the heart for pushing blood into the lungs.
Depending upon the heart condition of the newborn the type of surgery is decided. There are two scenarios in a newborn baby. In first case there is very small flow of blood into the lungs thus leading to a condition of cyanosis. In such cases a shunt is grafted in the newborn. This procedure is called as systemic to pulmonary artery shunt or Blalock-Taussig (BT) shunt. In second case there excessive flow of blood into the lungs which requires a corrective surgery to restrict the flow of blood into the lungs. This is achieved by placing a piece of material or a “band” around the pulmonary artery.
There are rarely any case when a new born baby, having only single ventricle , has a normal blood flow into the lungs. FONTAN Surgery in India is able to address these blood issues into the lungs and maximises the efficiency of the single ventricle heart.
